How Often Should You Get Your Gray Blended?
Share
Gray doesn't grow in on a schedule. Your appointments can. At Hello Beautiful Salon in Missouri City, the first question after a gray blend is usually how soon to come back. The answer depends on which kind of blend you chose.
How Often Should You Get Your Gray Blended?
In our experience, full gray coverage needs a touch-up every three to five weeks. Past that, it starts to look grown out. Gray blended into lowlights or babylights usually stretches to six to seven weeks. The two tones grow into each other instead of splitting into a hard line. We set your first interval at your consultation, then adjust it once we see how your gray behaves.
Wait past your window and the line where new gray meets your last blend starts to show. Your part shows it first.

Your Goal for Your Gray Sets the Pace
The goal you bring to your consultation shapes the schedule more than anything else. Every guest's plan for their gray is a little different.
Some want full coverage. They're after something close to their old brunette, every visit, no exceptions. Solid color shows a crisp line against new gray, so that goal lives on the three to five week rhythm.
Others want to keep it. They tell us they want to grow it out gracefully, or that they've decided they like their gray. Blending platinum gray with lowlights is one of the prettiest ways to do that. It also earns the longer six to seven week stretch.
Some come in ready to go from jet black to silver. That's a bigger change than a touch-up, so we map it out together at the consultation. Our page on your first visit walks through that first sit-down start to finish.
Whatever you want, the consultation comes first. We listen to what you're after, check where your gray sits, and set your first interval from there. No judgment if box color got you here, either. Before you leave, we show you how to keep the tone right at home.
What Changes Your Blending Schedule
Three things move your number away from the average. How fast your hair grows. How much natural pigment is left. And whether we cover your gray or blend it into lowlights.
Fast-growing hair needs more frequent visits. So does hair that's gone mostly gray at the front and temples. There's less natural color left to hide new growth.
Where your gray sits matters too. Gray concentrated near the hairline usually means a shorter window. Gray spread evenly across the whole head can often stretch longer.
We color with Keune. From the chair, we've noticed it tends to come out warmer than a lot of the box color guests bring in. Full coverage ends up with depth instead of looking flat. That matters more the longer you go between visits. A flat, single-tone color shows regrowth faster than one with dimension built in.
One of our colorists, Rachel, watches for missed gray at every root touch-up. A Google review from one of our guests put it this way: "She is very detailed about hair and did my root touchup perfectly! She also found one small strand that was still white and asked if she can fix it." Catching a strand like that early keeps your interval on track.
Gray blending is one part of the color work we do. If you're weighing it against a bigger change, our page on hair color in Missouri City walks through the other options.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long or Come In Too Soon
Waiting too long makes your next appointment longer, and coming in too soon spends a visit you didn't need.
Past your window, we're not fixing a thin line anymore. We're covering a wider band of new growth, plus lowlights that have drifted from where they started. That takes more time in the chair, not less.
Too early is its own problem. There's barely any new growth to work with. We'd be reprocessing hair that's already blended. That doesn't help your color. It doesn't save a trip either, since you'd need the same appointment again a few weeks later.
We've watched a five-week interval stretch to ten or eleven weeks because it felt like an easy trip to skip. It always adds chair time at the next visit. It never saves any. We're fine with flexibility. We just want you to know what it costs in chair time, not only how the grow-out looks in photos.
Getting your brows tinted with us too? Ask about spacing the two appointments when you book.
How to Keep Your Blend Looking Natural Between Appointments
A color-safe shampoo and a weekly purple or silver shampoo do most of the work at home. Gray picks up brassiness the same way blonde does.
- Wash with a color-safe shampoo.
- Swap in a purple or silver shampoo once a week to keep the tone from drifting warm.
- Apply a heat protectant before any hot tool.
- Turn your iron down. We watch toner fade faster from heat than from almost anything else a guest does at home.
You can see how different blends grow out on our Instagram. It's an easy way to picture three weeks next to seven on real hair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you stretch a gray blending appointment past seven weeks? Yes, but the line at your part and temples will likely show first. How far you can push it depends on how much natural pigment is left and how much contrast you're comfortable with.
Does gray hair grow in faster than colored hair? No. Gray grows at the same rate as the rest of your hair. It just shows sooner against your last blend.
Should you cover gray completely or blend it with lowlights? Cover it if you want the most uniform look right after your visit. Blend it if you'd rather it grow out softer. Full coverage shows a harder line as it grows, while lowlights never look as uniform on day one.
Does gray come in at different rates across your head? Yes. In our chairs, gray usually shows first at the temples and along the part, before the crown. That's where a blend tends to need attention first, so it's the first place we check at your appointment.
